Toby Fox has officially confirmed that Deltarune Chapter 5 is scheduled to launch sometime in 2026, giving fans a clearer picture of what to expect next from the beloved indie RPG series.
As the spiritual successor to Undertale, Deltarune has attracted enormous attention since its early demo chapters. In fact, the first two chapters of Deltarune reached higher peak player counts on Steam than Undertale itself. The game’s physical release also proved successful, becoming the best-selling digital title on the Nintendo Switch 2 shortly after the console’s debut.
Following months of speculation, Fox has now reassured players that development is progressing steadily and that the next chapter is firmly on track.

Deltarune Chapter 5 Is Still Planned for 2026
After the paid release of Deltarune – which included Chapters 1 through 4 Toby Fox confirmed that all future chapters would be delivered as free updates. The game is currently planned to feature seven chapters in total, with significant gaps between releases due to the small development team and Fox’s careful approach to production.
At the end of Chapter 4, fans were teased with the promise that Chapter 5 would arrive in 2026. This timeline was recently reaffirmed by Fox himself in a New Year update shared on social media.
In his post, Fox wished fans a happy new year and stated that Deltarune Chapter 5 remains on schedule for a 2026 release. While no exact launch date was given, he confirmed that localization work for the chapter has already begun—an important milestone that suggests development is entering its later stages.

Localization Underway, Story Teases Shared
Alongside the update, Toby Fox subtly teased upcoming story elements by sharing a screenshot featuring new lines of dialogue. While details remain scarce, the teaser sparked immediate discussion within the community.
One major point of interest appears to be the Shadow Crystals, mysterious items obtained by defeating secret bosses in previous chapters. The update hints that Chapter 5 may expand on their lore, potentially involving the character Seam, who has long been connected to these hidden rewards.
Fans also noticed references suggesting the possible return of the iconic “Annoying Dog”, a recurring joke character in Fox’s games. This time, the character may even play a functional role in gameplay, possibly as an unusual weapon or mechanic.
Previously, Fox mentioned that Chapter 5 was still “several months away,” citing the need for thorough testing and translation to ensure a smooth release across regions.
Looking Ahead: Chapter 6 and Beyond
While attention is currently focused on Chapter 5, Fox has already hinted at plans for future chapters. In a development update late last year, he revealed that parts of the Deltarune team are expected to begin working on Chapter 6 within the next few months.
He also previously mentioned that early design work—such as experimenting with enemy bullet patterns—has already started for later chapters. Based on the current development pace, Deltarune Chapter 6 is unlikely to arrive before 2027.
Deltarune’s Growing Legacy
The continued success of Deltarune has further solidified Toby Fox’s reputation as one of indie gaming’s most influential creators. Undertale is frequently cited as one of the greatest indie games ever made, and Deltarune has followed a similar trajectory with each new chapter.
Fox’s impact extends beyond his own games as well. He has contributed music to major Nintendo titles, including Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and the Pokémon series, and remains a highly respected figure in the industry.
With Chapter 5 on the horizon and more content planned for the years ahead, Deltarune shows no signs of slowing down—and fans can expect the next chapter to be another major moment for indie gaming when it arrives in 2026.
